One of the oldest boys’ choirs existing in the world, The Vienna Boys’ Choir, provides a choral feast for audiences. A symbol of Austria for over five hundred years, The Vienna Boys’ Choir will continue a tradition of singing unbroken since 1498.
The Vienna Boys' Choir is synonymous with choral music. In a city that has been home to many of the greatest names in music history, it continues to be one of the most recognized names and sounds in the world.
The Choir was founded in 1498 when Emperor Maximilian 1 of Austria moved his court and musicians from Innsbruck to Vienna, giving specific instructions that there were to be six boys among his musicians. The former court choir became the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the imperial uniform was replaced by the now famous sailor suit. The choir began to give concerts outside the Chapel, performing motets, secular works and children’s operas. Within a year it was performing in Berlin, and soon all over the world. |
